The Values and Policies of Personal Information Chair at the Institut Mines-Télécom has joined forces with Médiamétrie to carry out a new study on the way in which the French manage their personal data .
This survey, conducted in May 2019, intends to extend the one previously published in 2017 *. It covers the evolution of strategies implemented by users, digital identities and online purchasing, as well as the perception of the Country Email List impact of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which came into force on 25 May 2018. The personal data of Internet users is often at the heart of the economic models of the main digital players.
But to what extent, what scope, are citizens ready to share their information, in what framework and with whom? Are they subjected to the practices of these major players or are they now developing new behaviors preventing the collection of their personal data? Awareness This study reveals, among other things, that French Internet users are even more vigilant on the Internet compared to a few years ago (they were already 54% in the 2017 survey).
Of these, more than half of them categorically refuse to share their geolocation data and systematically erase their Internet browsing traces; and 57% of them feel more monitored by private companies offering services such as search engines, social networks, e-commerce sites. However, trust is a major economic issue: it is this which ultimately determines the purchase. And this survey confirms that those who protect themselves the most are those who buy the most.
